What to Wear for Light & Airy Family Photos
By Sarah McCall, Virginia Beach Family Photographer
One of the biggest questions I get before a session is:
“What should we wear?”
And I get it—figuring out outfits for the whole family can feel overwhelming! But don’t worry, I’ve got you. The right outfits will elevate your photos, bring everyone together visually, and help create that soft, dreamy, light & airy look I specialize in.
This guide will help you feel confident and ready, so all you have to focus on is making memories with your people.
⸻
Soft, Neutral Tones Are Your Best Friend
Creams, whites, beige, light gray, soft blush, muted sage, dusty blue—these tones reflect natural light beautifully and create that bright, timeless vibe you see in my portfolio.
Avoid Bright or Neon Colors
These can be distracting and cast strange tones onto skin. Think soft and subtle over bold and loud.
⸻
Skip the Dark Colors
Deep blacks, navy, or burgundy can make your photos feel heavy and absorb all that beautiful natural light. If you love dark tones, try a lighter version—like charcoal instead of black or dusty rose instead of maroon. Lighter tones help keep everything soft, romantic, and glowy.
⸻
Go for Flow and Texture
Fabrics like linen, cotton, gauze, or lace look beautiful in natural light and add movement to your photos. Flowy maxi dresses are always a win! Avoid stiff or overly structured fabrics—they can look harsh in soft, light-filled images.
⸻
Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone in matching jeans and white tees. Choose 2–3 coordinating colors and mix in some subtle patterns or textures. Think harmony, not uniformity.
Tip: Start with mom’s outfit first. If you feel beautiful and confident, that energy will show in every photo—and makes it easier to plan the rest around your look.
⸻
Keep It Simple for the Kids
Comfort = happy kids = magic photos.
Rompers, overalls, knit sets, and simple dresses are perfect. Avoid bold logos or graphics—classic, timeless pieces will keep the focus on your sweet kiddos and your connection.
⸻
Details Matter
Neutral shoes, soft accessories, bare feet for the littles (if safe)—it all adds to the overall feel of your session. Skip smartwatches, neon hair ties, and baseball caps unless they’re part of your family’s personality or story.
⸻
Bonus: I’ll Help You Style Your Family!
Not sure if that dress works? Want to send me outfit ideas? I LOVE helping clients choose looks. I also offer a small client wardrobe with hand-picked, photo-friendly pieces you’re welcome to use.
⸻
You Deserve Photos That Feel Like You
At the end of the day, the goal is for your photos to feel like you—natural, connected, and full of love. Outfits are just one part of that. Let’s make the process simple and fun, so you can relax and enjoy every moment.
