5 Ways to Prepare for a Fun, Relaxed Photo Session with Kids
By Sarah McCall, Virginia Beach Family Photographer
As a mom and a family photographer, I totally get it—getting everyone dressed, out the door, and picture-ready can feel like a lot. But your photo session doesn’t have to be stressful. In fact, I want it to feel fun, natural, and even a little magical.
Here are 5 simple ways to help your family (especially your kiddos) feel calm, confident, and ready to shine during your session.
⸻
1. Choose Comfortable, Kid-Friendly Outfits
Yes, we want the outfits to look cute—but comfort comes first! Pick clothes your kids feel good in (nothing itchy or too tight). Soft neutrals, light textures, and flowy fabrics work beautifully with my light and airy style.
Bonus Tip: Bring backup outfits just in case something gets messy.
⸻
2. Leave Plenty of Time Before the Session
Try not to schedule anything stressful or rushed right before your photos. Give yourselves buffer time to get ready, have a snack, and arrive relaxed. When the mood is calm, the photos always reflect that.
⸻
3. Let Kids Be Themselves
Please don’t stress if your kids are shy, silly, or energetic—that’s part of the magic! I’ll guide you through gentle posing and natural prompts to keep things light and fun. The best photos come from authentic moments, not forced smiles.
⸻
4. Bring a Few “Session Day” Essentials
Pack a small bag with:
• Water bottles
• Non-messy snacks (think Cheerios, fruit snacks, puffs)
• A favorite toy or comfort item (just in case)
• Baby wipes for quick cleanups
Having these on hand can save the day and help kids reset if needed.
⸻
5. Focus on Connection, Not Perfection
Your job during the session? Just love on your people. Hug them. Tickle them. Let them run wild in the waves or cuddle in close. Don’t worry about who’s looking at the camera—I’ll take care of capturing the beauty in your real moments.
⸻
The goal is to create images that feel like you.
Joyful, honest, and full of love.
